Resolutions

This year.... I will stop, start, do more, do less, continue, improve {insert your goal here}.

The tradition of creating New Year's resolutions dates back to the ancient Babylonians. They would make promises to their gods to return property and pay off debts. Which... isn't too far off from the standard resolutions that people set today: get out of debt, lose weight, eat healthier, take a trip, make new friends, find a new job, be happier.

For most people, December 31 is out with the old, and January 1 is in with the new. New year, new you, right?? Not sure it works exactly like that. Yet, even with a failure rate of almost 90 %, people start the new year with a list of things they want to change about themselves.

So... like most of the world... I like to evaluate my life on December 31 and start fresh on January 1.

This year... 2013... I would like to...

- EAT HEALTHIER. 2012 was a big wake-up call for me. It was the first time that I really had to watch what I ate. I learned that the more food I tried, the more food I liked. I expanded my list of vegetables with Brussels sprouts, cucumbers, spaghetti squash, squash, asparagus, beets... and I am probably leaving some out. I also started to eliminate processed foods. In general, this has helped me feel lighter and just so much better. So, I would like to continue striving to eat a fresh diet!

- ELIMINATE FAST FOOD. I know this goes hand in hand with "eat healthier," but I wanted to give it some special attention. I don't each much fast food... typically only when traveling or when really in a time crunch. But, I want to completely eliminate it. There is little to no nutritional value in most meals and it typically leaves me with a significant case of heartburn and a greasy/fat feeling. So, what am I calling fast food? This was a little harder to define than I anticipated... but I am going to use the guideline that if it has a drive through window, I won't eat there. Now, I know more and more places have drive through windows.... so places like Panera that have one... I am not counting. And, I can still eat Subway - I had to have a travel option.

- EXERCISE MORE. 2012 was a great year for rediscovering my joy of exercise. I completed my second half marathon, was introduced to Grand Jete/Pure Barre, and feel in love with yoga. I am excited to continue my journey working out.

- NO WALMART. Just because I hate going there. It stresses me out. And... I kind of want the challenge of not buying anything from Walmart.

- PERSONAL. I have a couple of personal things I am working towards that I am not ready to announce to the world. Don't get too excited... getting pregnant is not on the list. But... I will share these throughout the year as I am more comfortable with announcing!! I promise this isn't a catch to get you to keep reading my blog...

That about sums up my list... What are your resolutions??

  1. I'm like you - I basically only eat fast food in airports. So last year when we were moving, after all of our kitchen stuff was already packed up, I decided to get fast food for the first time. I totally splurged - I got a baked sweet potato from Wendy's, haha. I pulled up to the drive thru and realized I HAD FORGOTTEN HOW TO USE A DRIVE THRU. It was kind of ridiculous, but at the same time, I was very proud of myself.

I also can't stand Wal Mart and haven't been in a while.

I was so excited when we moved here because I was SURE I would go to Pure Barre....but I can't. It's so expensive and I just can't bring myself to do it!

    Good luck with your resolutions!!

  2. Is it bad that I didn't make any resolutions this year? I know its important to do so for personal growth but I guess I am sick of pretending that just because its a new year resolution I'm going to do it. Because I just don't. I think I will just try and make everyday count and make more of an effort to do what makes me happy as much as I can instead of trying to please those around me all the time. And maybe steal your exercise more resolution because that's a good one to have on the mind as I approach 30!

    1. I have mixed emotions about resolutions, but I always end up making them anyway. I love the idea of doing what makes you happy!! Constantly trying to please others is so exhausting - and I am so guilty of this too.
